Enertech builds cylindrical battery plant in Russia64
Enertech International will establish a cylindrical battery production base in Russia. It plans to build a 10GWh battery production facility by 2030 after commercial operation in 2025. This is the first time for a Korean company to set up a battery factory in Russia. This is a stepping stone to preemptively respond to the local cylindrical battery market, where demand for batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS) is rapidly increasing.
Enertech announced on the 27th that it plans to establish a Russian subsidiary 'Enertech Russia' (tentative name) in the first half of this year. It is part of the local battery plant construction plan. The plan is to accelerate the battery business for electric vehicles along with securing the first overseas production base. The Russian plant will start construction at the end of this year and start commercial operation in 2025. The annual production capacity is 2GWh. After that, it plans to secure a battery production capacity of 10GWh per year by 2030 through additional investment. 10GWh can produce batteries for 160,000 electric vehicles (based on 60kW capacity).
The Russian plant is equipped with a cylindrical battery production facility. Cylindrical batteries have been mainly used for non-electric vehicles. However, after the cylindrical battery with a diameter of 21 mm and a height of 70 mm was installed in the Tesla Model 3, the demand for electric vehicles is rapidly increasing. For cylindrical batteries, 18650 (diameter 18mm, height 5mm) and 21700 (diameter 21mm, height 70mm) batteries have their own specifications and have the highest productivity among electric vehicle batteries. An industry official said, "As the application of electric vehicles is rapidly expanding, such as LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI supplying 21700 cylindrical batteries to Tesla and Rivian, the demand for cylindrical batteries is also rapidly increasing."
Enertech has mainly produced pouch-type batteries. In the second half of this year, NCM811 (80% nickel, 10% cobalt, 10% manganese) battery will be commercialized for the first time and will be supplied to delivery van models in the United States. Currently, only LG Energy Solutions, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation can manufacture NCM811 batteries.
In particular, it is noteworthy that Enertech is the only Korean battery maker entering the Russian market. It is expected to help secure the demand for batteries for electric vehicles in Russia and help 'K-battery' enter the Russian market. Rosatom, which acquired Enertech, is a Russian state-owned nuclear power plant company and plans to convert 40% of its total sales to eco-friendly businesses such as ESS. An Enertech official said, "We will use the long-standing manufacturing technology of the NCM811 pouch battery as a stepping stone to target the cylindrical battery market."
